Society for Nutrition

Co-sponsorship of the Annual Meeting of the Society for Nutrition Education: Global Issues, Local Impact held in San Francisco, California, July 15 to 18, 2006

The MGW Center’s sponsorship included providing leadership for the organization of a scientific session co-hosted by the SNE Divisions of Sustainable Food Systems and International Nutrition Education. The session, titled, The Role of Indigenous/Local Knowledge in Promoting Nutrition and Sustaining Livelihoods: Examples from Near and Far was moderated by Audrey Maretzki and featured presentations by Saleia Afele- Faamuli from Samoa, Suttilak Smitasiri from Thailand, Paul Schultz, Tribal Elder from the White Earth Indian Reservation and Craig Hassel from the University of Minnesota. A special feature of the session was an exhibit of informational materials and cultural artifacts related to the work of Dr. Marjorie Grant Whiting, assembled by Debbie Dillon-Adams and Helen Magnuson. The Center’s Board of Directors also hosted a networking dinner for the session presenters.

This sponsorship, which involved a grant of $2000 to the Society for Nutrition Education, highlighted the interrelated cultural, scientific and nutrition education goals of the MGW Center and brought the activities of the Center to the attention of approximately 800 professional nutrition educators from the US, Canada, Asia, and Europe. The possibility of sponsoring sessions related to Dr. Whiting’s nutrition education and socio-cultural interests at future meetings of selected professional societies may be considered.
