Indigenous Knowledges ConferenceSponsorship of a Walkabout Session and exhibit at the International Indigenous Knowledges Conference: Transforming the Academy held at Penn State University in May 2004. The Walkabout Session provided a unique interactive educational experience for 100+ conference attendees that included native craftpersons as well as scholars from 17 countries. An exhibit of artifacts collected by MGW and a varied menu of Native American foods added to the distinctive quality of the Walkabout Session's educational experience and promoted networking among the conference participants. Sponsorship of this session supported the scientific and educational mission of the Center and promoted the integration of culture, arts and the environment. It was a session that enabled people from diverse cultural backgrounds to share their cultural knowledge in a way that reflected Marjorie's unique networking style. A grant of $2,000 awarded to Penn State University’s Interinstitutional Consortium for Indigenous Knowledge (ICIK) enabled each of the Walkabout presenters to adapt their presentation to the interactive nature of the session. Additional funds supported the MGW Center’s exhibit and the conference attendance of the Board President. Through it’s support of this conference the Center established a relationship with ICIK that led to the Center’s support for community residents of Leguruki and Chekereni to attend a Workshop on Indigenous Knowledge and Development that was held in Moshi, Tanzania in March 2007. The presentations selected for inclusion in the Walkabout Session were: Backtracks: Following in the Footsteps of our AncestorsBy Gregory Al Weiss and Hazen Audel Construction of Native American Identity through the Visual Arts By Victoria Weaver Cultural Significance of Handmade Andean Cloth and Implications of its Decline By Elayne L.
